August/September 2006. Recordings and Identification of The Reading Service New Zealand on 3935KHz (approx.) Levin, 175°17'E 40°40'S

It is mutual here around 15 September 18.20 UTC. G4ZFQ 1.31°W 50.71°N

This signal is weak, will require very exceptional conditions to identify audibly. This station has been reported on 3935.065KHz, the signals I receive are close to that, and appear, peak and fade out around the expected times. It is the only station listed on that frequency. I have confirmed times that the station was off the air with the station manager.

The carrier of this station is distinctive, it is not stable, moves randomly about +/- 1Hz. In addition it jumps by up to 1Hz at irregular intervals. ZL1BPU supplied a plot which matched my reception at that time.

Signals were weaker in New Zealand for the first part of the opening to UK! Careful comparisons show the same frequency pattern. The general trend will be affected by Doppler at each location, especially after travelling almost 12,000 miles. Note the frequencies on my chart are NOT calibrated. I have degraded the waterfall by compressing too much!

This is just an example of the recordings I produce. I have kept all equipment and settings as constant as possible, noting when changes were made. These daily recordings could be used to indicate signal strength  variations over a period of time. June 2007 still using the same RX and antenna. Example shows AOR 7030, attenuator at -10db and 80m dipole (at 40 feet) fed through a resistive splitter giving about another 9db attenuation with about 20db isolation between the 4 outputs. The computer and soundcard was changed once during the period.

Below, a list of all days recordings were made, (Filename of chart produced) Recording is continuing on this and other frequencies. June 2007

Recordings continue October 2006
